Gum disease starts with the accumulation of plaque build up on the teeth when inadequate oral hygiene of brushing and flossing is performed.
The buildup of plaque leads to the inflammation and bleeding of gums, which allows bacteria on the plaque to enter the bloodstream and circulate around the body.
The bacteria cause inflammation and buildup in the arteries leading to blockage, some of the buildup may break off the wall of the artery and becomes a blood clot that may travel via the bloodstream and causing a stroke.
Gum-disease has been found to affect patients with diabetes.
A study by the U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Kidney Disease found a link between the severity and progression of gum disease and mortality in diabetes patients.
The study found that gum disease has two-way effect on diabetes; patients with diabetes have increased risk of gum disease, and with gum disease there is high risk of inflammation worsening blood-sugar control.
Studies showed links between healthy gum and teeth and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, or COPD.
COPD is a respiratory disease and condition whose main cause is cigarette-smoking.
Bacteria from inflamed and infected gum can reach to lung tissues causing frequent bouts of infections in patients with COPD, according to the American Academy of Periodontology.
Studies have shown that people with less teeth and severe gum disease have higher mortality rate than people without gum disease.
In fact, people with sever gum diseases are twice as likely to die, of any cause, before the age of 64 compared to those with healthy gum.
According to researchers; higher rates of premature birth among women with periodontal disease have been found.
The University of Alabama conducted research hormone that showed infection of the gum triggers and increase in the levels of the hormone prostaglandin and other compounds that induce labour.
The study demonstrated the reduction of premature birth by 84% for women who received gum treatment known as deep cleaning.
One of the major side effect of gum disease is the loss of bone around the teeth, and the loss of soft-tissue attached to teeth leading to teeth loss.
Severe bone loss around the teeth due to gum disease has been suggested as a sign in some patients of condition known as osteoporosis.

Dr. Ojjeh is awesome! He cares for me and my whole family. He takes the time to talk to you about your concerns and treatment, he explains treatment with visual aids using tablets that makes it easy to understand. He truly cares for you and also your wellbeing. I wish all dentists were like him.
My whole family has seeing Dr. Ojjeh for many years now. He has worked with my son since his first check-up. My son, broke off both his permanent teeth about 1/3 of the way in an accident at school. Dr. Ojjeh made room in his day to see my son immediately. He did not feel comfortable putting crowns on my son at his age (9) so he put on a veneer that we will later change to crowns when the braces are done.
Dr. Ojjeh is extremely patient and takes the time to explain exactly what he is doing or what needs to be done. He went above and beyond to help me in the middle of my implant surgery, I can't say enough about him and the staff, they were absolutely wonderful!
Dr. Ojjeh is by far the best dentist I have been to, He takes the time to explain everything from dental conditions to treatment. He is very thorough, takes photos of damaged teeth and show Hi tech simulation of treatment. I was very happy about the way he explained to me how I can better improve my teeth and gum conditions. I wish all doctors have the same passion and professional conduct towards their patients as Dr. Ojjeh. I highly recommend!
Dr. Ojjey has been our family dentist since 2009. He is a very professional, capable dentist and knowledgeable in his practice. But just as important, he is patient and kind, taking the time to explain procedures and dental health. He will even utilize some extras like photos to assist in his explanations. He also adds in a bit of humor to help his patients remain at ease. I would recommend him to other family and friends!
Dr. Ojjeh provides outstanding service with the most up-to-date technology and practices. He cares about his patience and so do his staff and assistants. I could not recommend him more highly.
Dr. Ojjeh is very caring, kind, and attentive to details. He spends enough time with the patient unlike some other dentists who rush from patient to patients without spending enough time with patient answering their questions. Dr. Ojjeh uses several technology and gadgets to educate and inform his patients about their dental conditions and treatment like photos, slideshow and educational videos. He truly showed me how I can take care of my teeth and gums. I highly recommend.
The dentist did a fantastic job cleaning my teeth during my first visit.
